The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
