The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
